Major Project Pre Proposal

Proposal Idea

I intend to make a League of Legends style champion or enivironment illustration of around 200 ~ hours work.
I aim to portray the feeling of story within the piece with strong identity.

For the planning stage I will references of the style I wish to emulate. I need to study and do a lot of practice sketches in the initial project planning to recreate such a specific style. I need to research the production process, and how involved artists are in the ideas stage of this style of art, though all ideas this time will be mine.
I intend to create the piece in my own style but taking inspiration from target material.

Reasons for Choosing This Project

I just love the art. The characters. The game. It has been my inspiration for art since I started and I know this will be an incredible challenge for me as my art is no where near this level. But I just want to try. I want to make my final project at university a love letter to the art and the game that brought me here.

Reference Ideas

The style for League is very specific. While you can tell artists apart they all have a clean and highly polished style. Close up the detail is incredible, but it still holds up in a smaller form for load screens which means it needs a very strong character identity. Between skins the characters are still identifiable, even though they’re so very different.

For this one specifically the pattern on the clothes show this detail. On load screens or even in the store these details wouldn’t even be seen, but they’re there anyway because of the amazing amount of polish Riot artists add.

I chose this one because of the detail not just in the character but the background. The way the eye is drawn to the character still, but when you look closely at the background you see incredible detail that would seemingly not even matter in game. The art pieces for Champion Splash arts are illustration masterpieces as well as a great display for the character intended.

The artists for these illustrations usually have no input in the actual character concept, which is something I will have to also do myself.
