First 3D Attempt

One of my first assignments was to make a 3D mug in Maya. Before this I’d never attempted anything in 3D.

It took about an hour of frustration to figure out how everything worked, but as I setttled in I found myself getting more comfortable.

The first thing I did was add a cylinder and remove the top creating a cup shape. Then I added thickness to the cylinder to make it look more substantial. After this I added a donut shape and cut it in half to create a mug handle.

After smoothing out the bottom I was left with a successful mug shape but I wasn’t satisfied with how rough it looked even with the smoothing tool. I removed some of the side in order to connect the handle to the mug smoothly.

After using the smoothing tool I was much more satisfied with the shape, but the handle still looked incorrect. This is where I looked up a few extra tutorials and went with a ‘Line Tool’ to try and shape the handle into something a lot more realistic and appealing.

After about 30 minutes of shaping I was much more satisfied with the shape of the handle. I finished by adding a Maya material called ‘Blinn’ and changing the colour to something a bit more appealing.

Overall I really enjoyed the process. I’m really proud of the handle I created but I have a lot I need to improve on. I need to learn the technical terms, and how to speed up the process without sacrificing image. I also need to be able to document in more detail.
I hope these things will come with time and practice and can’t wait to use them in more projects in the future.
